March 2023 – The hotel management company, Valor Hospitality, has appointed Lee Pickersgill as the organisation’s first-ever Energy Manager, focusing on the reduction of energy throughout its UK portfolio, as it sets out its ambition to become the leading hospitality company for sustainability.
The role has been introduced in response to rising fuel costs and sustainability targets, to drive the business’s focus on energy reduction as UK electricity prices in the 12 months to December 2022 rose by 65.4% and gas prices by 128.9%. In his new role, Lee will be working across Valor’s 37 UK hotels to implement energy reduction and future de-carbonisation strategies.
As well as striving to exceed energy targets, Lee will also be promoting sustainability across the workplace to create a culture in which the environment is at the forefront. This will be done by utilising and investing in technology that can measure outputs and best practices.
Lee Pickersgill, energy manager for Valor Hospitality, said: “It’s an exciting time for the hospitality industry to begin to make real strides in having a positive impact on the environment. My role will entail more than simply reducing energy usage and costs, but will also support Valor’s mission to change perspectives of what sustainability means, while encouraging positive change in our colleagues, customers and partners.
“We have a number of measures in place to reduce our carbon footprint, for example monitoring all waste including energy, water and other resources, as well as leading the industry in setting, measuring and executing stringent targets for carbon reduction, water management, waste control, social returns, environmental enhancements and wellness in the workplace.
“We hope that through our work in this space, we will be able to influence other organisations to achieve the same goals by engaging our customers and leading by example.”
Brian McCarthy, Managing Director, at Valor UK & Europe said: “Sustainability has been a focus of Valor’s for a long time, as we consistently pursue new greener more sustainable approaches to our work.
Our industry has been through a lot in the last few years, and with rising costs continuing to add pressure, we knew we needed to look at how we can help reduce costs in a sustainable way that will have a lasting positive impact on the industry and the planet.
“We take the responsibility of implementing ESG strategies across our business incredibly seriously and want the protection of our environment to become second nature to our people and culture. It will be good to see Lee’s ideas put into practice and allow us to continue to spearhead sustainability within the sector.”
