Sea Palms Resort Enhances Golf Offerings

Legendary course designer George W. Cobb Sr. once said that he found pleasure in the design of resort courses that golfers found both attractive and enjoyable to play. Cobb said they should not be overly challenging to the vacationing golfer seeking relaxation.

While Cobb’s career highlight most certainly is the par 3 at Augusta National Golf Club, in his prime, he created more than 100 original golf course designs and dozens of redesigns, including Sea Palms Resort.

George Cobb and Tom Jackson designed the golf course at Sea Palms Resort and Conference Center on St. Simons Island in 1967. When it was completed, Frank Matey, the Jacksonville Times-Union golf writer was quoted as saying that “a great new golf vacation site is going to be discovered soon… the Golden Isles area on the islands off Brunswick, Georgia.”

18-HOLE MAIN COURSE

Recent renovations have been made to the main 18-hole course, including rebuilt and reshaped bunkers with brilliant white G-angle sand. To further raise the course’s already well-regarded aesthetic appeal, native ornamental grasses were planted in strategic areas along the course.

The course plays to a par of 71. At just under 6,500 yards from the tips, it is not long by today’s standards. The pines, palms and palmetto trees that line the fairways along with some overhanging moss place a premium on driving accuracy.

There is a considerable contrast in length between the two nines, with the longer back including a pair of fairly long par 5s, the second of which is part of a stout trio of finishing holes that includes the longest par 5, par 3 and par 4 on the course. The water-lined 18th is a terrific finishing hole.

NINE-HOLE WEST COURSE

The 9-hole West course is a shorter layout that plays to a par of 34 (four par 3s). This first-rate traditional coastal design is a challenging “Executive” course. Water comes in into play on seven of the nine holes, which adds another element for accurate shots.

Sea Palms Resort & Conference Center is the only resort on St. Simons Island to offer 27 holes of championship golf on site. Sea Palms golf amenities also include private lessons, practice putting green, short game practice areas and a driving range. The golf staff can help plan tournament formats, pairings, scoring and cart staging. Rental clubs are also available.

FOOTGOLF COURSE

Adjacent to the 9-hole West Course, Sea Palms Resort also has St. Simons’ only footgolf course. The up-and-coming sport is golf played with a soccer ball, with the object of kicking the ball into 21-inch holes. According to the U.S. Footgolf Association, the sport is available at nearly 300 golf courses in the U.S.

In addition to the golf course enhancements, other key property changes have been completed on the resort’s conference center, restaurant & lounge, accommodations and pool area.
